PCV Speaker Series: Snoring Can Kill!
Recent science has shown that there is a reason a third of our life is spent unconsciously. Our speaker, Sylvan Mintz, DDS, will discuss what defines a good night's sleep, and how the quality and quantity of sleep affects longevity, safety, dementia, heart disease, cancer and other health related consequences. He'll also address snoring, noting that while snoring can seem harmless, it is one of the most frequent signs of obstructive sleep apnea, which causes periodic lack of oxygen during sleep. In children, snoring by itself can cause harm. Dr. Mintz will discuss simple strategies for obtaining restorative sleep, along with medical and dental interventions if needed.
About our speaker:
Dr. Mintz received his BA from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1963; DDS from University of Maryland, Baltimore College of Dental Surgery in 1967; and an MS degree in Pediatric Dentistry from Boston University School of Graduate Dentistry in 1971 with a Certificate in Anesthesia. He was also awarded Certificates in TMD (Temporomandibular Joint Disorders) and Orofacial Pain from Rutgers Dental School in 1991. He is the only dentist in MD, DC and VA who is Board certified by both American Board of Orofacial Pain and Dental Sleep Medicine. Active staff for 40 years at Children's Hospital in DC and previous chief of dentistry at Prince George's Hospital. Previous clinical instructor at U of MD and Howard University Dental Schools. Currently a regular consultant to Children's Hospital Sleep Clinic and Dental departments, Walter Reed Orofacial Pain and Sleep Medicine departments, UM Dental School Orofacial Pain Clinic and GWU Clinical Assistant Professor in pediatrics. Dr. Mintz has published the largest clinical study on managing sleep apnea in adults with oral devices as well as an article on TMD in children in a medical journal called Sleep & Breathing in May 2018. He is working on a pilot study on oral devices for children with OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea) at Children's National Medical Center.
